The #MeToo movement has been slow to gain any traction in Japan, and a surface level observation implies a large amount of passivity with regards to sexism in a country that is still dangerously patriarchal. The longer I’m with you, the less sure I become of myself. ‘I took his little hand and said, “You only care about yourself. With stories that pack a feminist punch and often raise a mirror up against the issues surrounding patriarchal Japan and some of its questionable social values, this book is often a hilarious, heart-squeezing riot. Here is The Lonesome Bodybuilder by Yukiko Motoya (Known as Picnic in the Storm if you have the UK version), a book similar to Convenience Store Woman in theme and intention but hugely different in execution. The world where these opening issues take place is remarkable. One of the fun aspects of Science Fiction comes from the imagining of new worlds, new races, and new ways presenting conflicts and the solutions to said conflicts. I was hooked, enjoying the ride through a wildly imaginative Sci-Fi tale. Several times I told myself that I’d read the next one and then set it down, and each time I struggled to follow through with that plan. What I didn’t expect was to end up binging my way through the other five issues in that volume in a single sitting. I grabbed Saga off the shelf just yesterday, expecting to read the next issue and set it aside to accomplish other tasks. Well, it certainly lived up to those lofty expectations. My expectations for the series couldn’t have been much higher prior to picking this back up. So many people praised the series, and I had some good friends assure me that I would like Saga a lot. I read the very first issue of Saga shortly after finishing Northlanders, and soon after picked up the Volume 1 trade paperback since it seemed like a series I would enjoy. Since that time, I have sampled a few graphic novels, seeking to find more volumes to hook me onto other narrative series. A few months ago, I was blown away by a graphic novel when I read Northlanders, and spent an entire evening reading the thing in one day. Sometimes going into a read with high expectations can lead to tremendous disappointment. by the second chapter because of what was happening.ģ. I glance a quite many hentai manga, because reasons. But since it's a hentai manga, it's interrupted by a lot of sex scenes.Ģ. But the series of events and how they are unfolding and being presented, keeps the plot engaging. The "decent-into-living-hell" kind of one. So you now know it's "that" kind of story. * Then after hearing about ways to earn money by sex from her school friends, she gets into escorting, and that's when everything goes downhill.ġ. She gives into his charms, and accepts her as his boyfriend. He forces here into sex, even gives LSD to her, and hence afterwards, declares her his girlfriend. * She then meets a guy in a shop, who invites for a drink, and her wanting to be an "adult", goes there. she asks her mom to do some make-up and then she suddenly becomes the most attractive girl in the school. * Saki is a socially reclusive yet a very naiive girl, and when entering in high school, wants to become more social-able. Writing was nothing special, but was bearable. And it made the disgusting moments even more disgusting (in a good way, of course).Ģ. I'm not a manga reader(but an avid anime watcher), so this is still on of my early manga experiences.īefore moving to the crux, I'll address the technical things first.ġ.
